Top 10 places in the world for accounting and finance careers

Did you know that choosing to study ACCA online is a great step towards building an international accountancy career? In anticipation of this year’s event, we’ve taken a look at the top ten places in the world to work as a qualified accountant.

The United Kingdom

The UK is home to 327,000 accountants, and also houses many internationally recognised accountancy bodies, including ACCA, CIMA, and the body for vocational accountants, AAT. If you’re aspiring to work for the ‘Big Four,’ or the world’s leading investment banks, London will be your prime target.

Singapore

Singapore is one of the world’s largest financial epicentres, with international trade and increased foreign direct investment (FDI) helping to grow the economy. It’s largely an English-speaking population, moreover, its close economic ties to Western countries make this city state a perfect choice for launching a career in accountancy or finance.

Germany

Known globally as a producer of high-quality goods and as the European leader in technology, Germany is seen as a great location to start a career in accounting. The country’s role in international business is consistently booming, as there are about 550 German companies operating in Hong Kong, another world leader in the finance industry.

New Zealand

New Zealand’s expanding business investments, increase in migration flow, and international trade makes it a great choice for finding accounting and finance jobs. The local shortage of skilled finance workers means the country has gone to great lengths to attract foreign candidates.

Brazil

Brazil has become a popular choice for accountants and finance professionals since the country recently adopted international accounting standards after experiencing a financial revolution. Between 1994 and 2009, Brazil received $330 billion in foreign direct investment alone.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s integration of Western and Chinese culture makes this location a haven for finding international finance jobs. With a low taxation policy and free trade, Hong Kong has established itself as a global leader in international finance.

Dubai

Earning an income-tax-free salary and living in one of the world’s top tourist destinations are just two of the many reasons to work in Dubai. Its multicultural population and rapidly evolving skyline means that accounting and finance jobs are growing, and its adoption of IFRS is what attracts foreign accountants and finance professionals to this liberal business climate.

South Africa

The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) is one of the leading accountancy bodies in the world. The country’s rich banking sector has attracted foreign interest and its high demand for qualified accountants means accounting and finance job seekers can expect a rewarding salary.

Switzerland

Serving as the world leader in private banking, Switzerland has long been a haven for foreign investors. A sizeable amount of its workforce is employed in the financial services sector, making up 10.5% of its total GDP. Switzerland remains a highly desirable choice for finance professionals looking to enjoy a profitable salary and further develop their career.

Israel

The adoption of open markets and regulatory practices have rewarded Israel with becoming one of the most economically advanced countries in the Middle East region. Their high-tech sector has been labelled as the Silicon Valley for the rest of the world. Plus, with no minimum capital required to start a business, foreigners can expect exciting career prospects.
