What is the circular economy?

Since the industrial revolution the concept of our economy has not changed very much. Products are manufactured at an increasingly efficient rate, meaning that consumers can get affordable products and experience a level of material comfort that would have been unimaginable to previous generations.

A linear economy has risen from this where manufacturers take resources, make a product, and eventually this product becomes waste when the consumer no longer wants the product.

It’s time to disrupt the linear economy for the benefits of people and the planet. Enter the circular economy.

Instead of the take-make-waste model, the circular economy has three main concepts.

  • Design out waste and pollution: begin to view waste as a design flaw to ensure waste and pollution are not created in the first place.

  • Keep products and materials in use: have you bought something before with free repairs for life? Or purchased a refill for cosmetics? These are examples of how innovations can create an economy that uses things rather than using them up.

  • Regenerate natural systems: the concept here is how businesses can make an active and conscious effort to do good to the planet, rather than just cause no harm.

Welcome to a new way of designing, making, and using things.
